On July 11, 1960, just eleven days after the independence of the Belgian Congo, the rich province of Katanga proclaimed its secession under the leadership of Moïse Tshombe, with the covert backing of Belgium and the major mining companies. The Congo Crisis triggered a civil war in which UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld died in a plane crash in 1961.

On July 11, 1987, the world's population reached 5 billion people, according to UN estimates, which declared that day World Population Day to raise awareness about the challenges of demographic growth. 🚀1979

On July 11, 1979, NASA's Skylab space station, out of control since 1978, re-entered Earth's atmosphere and partially disintegrated, scattering debris over the Indian Ocean and western Australia. Although there were no casualties, the fall caused worldwide alarm and was followed minute by minute by millions of people. Skylab had orbited Earth since 1973.
