✈️1940

On July 10, 1940, the German Luftwaffe launched the first phase of the Battle of Britain, the air campaign aimed at destroying the RAF and paving the way for an invasion of Britain. For four months, British pilots — many of them Polish, Czech and from other nationalities — resisted the bombing. Churchill immortalised them: "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few."

On July 10, 1973, The Bahamas gained independence from the United Kingdom, becoming the 32nd sovereign nation in the Americas. The archipelago of 700 islands and cays in the North Atlantic retained the British monarch as head of state as a constitutional monarchy. Lynden Pindling, who had fought for independence for decades, became its first Prime Minister.

📡1962

On July 10, 1962, NASA launched Telstar 1, the first active commercial communications satellite, which transmitted the first live television images across the Atlantic between Europe and America. The signal was picked up by stations in Maine, Great Britain and France. Telstar inaugurated the era of global satellite communications.
