On June 26, 1945, representatives of 50 countries signed the Charter of the United Nations in San Francisco — the founding treaty of the United Nations (UN). The UN, which replaced the failed League of Nations, was designed to maintain international peace and security, promote development and protect human rights. Today it has 193 member states — virtually every country in the world.
On June 26, 2015, the US Supreme Court issued the Obergefell v. Hodges ruling, establishing same-sex marriage as a constitutional right in all American states. The decision, adopted by 5 votes to 4, made the US the twenty-first country in the world to legalise equal marriage. The White House was lit in rainbow colours that night.
On June 26, 1963, US President John F. Kennedy delivered his famous speech in West Berlin before more than 450,000 people, ending with the phrase "Ich bin ein Berliner" ("I am a Berliner") in solidarity with West Berliners, encircled by the Berlin Wall since 1961. The speech was a message of support for the freedom of West Berlin in the face of the Communist threat.
