☢️1945

On July 16, 1945, at 5:29 in the morning, the first atomic bomb in history exploded in the Jornada del Muerto desert, New Mexico, in the test known as Trinity. Physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer recalled the words of the Bhagavad Gita: "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds." Three weeks later, the bombs would fall on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

On July 15, 2016, a faction of the Turkish army attempted a coup against the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The coup plotters seized bridges and media outlets in Istanbul and Ankara, but were repelled within hours. More than 300 people died. The failed coup was followed by a massive purge that affected more than 150,000 civil servants, military personnel and judges.

🏔️1911

On July 24, 1911, explorer and university professor Hiram Bingham III was guided by a local farmer to the ruins of Machu Picchu, the lost Inca city in the Peruvian Andes at 2,430 metres altitude. Although the site was known to local inhabitants, Bingham introduced it to the academic world. The ruins became the most visited archaeological site in South America.
