On July 22, 2011, Anders Behring Breivik carried out two coordinated terrorist attacks in Norway: a car bomb in central Oslo and a mass shooting at a youth camp on Utoya Island, killing 77 people in total. It remains the deadliest attack on Norwegian soil since the Second World War.
On July 22, 1209, the Massacre of Beziers took place during the Albigensian Crusade ordered by Pope Innocent III against the Cathar heresy in southern France. Thousands of inhabitants were slaughtered regardless of their faith, in one of the most brutal episodes of medieval religious persecution.
On July 22, 1969, the Soviet probe Luna 15 was orbiting the Moon in a last-ditch race to retrieve lunar soil samples before the Apollo 11 crew returned to Earth. The attempt failed when the craft crashed on the lunar surface, giving the United States an undisputed victory in the Moon race.
