On May 15, 1948, the day after the proclamation of the State of Israel, the armies of Egypt, Transjordan, Syria, Iraq and Lebanon invaded Israeli territory, starting the first Arab-Israeli War. The date is known to Palestinians as the Nakba ("the Catastrophe") — the day 700,000 Palestinian Arabs fled or were expelled from their homes never to return, creating a refugee crisis that persists today.
On May 15, 1957, the United Kingdom detonated its first hydrogen bomb over Christmas Island (Kiritimati) in the Pacific, becoming the third country in the world to possess thermonuclear weapons, after the US and the USSR. The nuclear test was a display of power in the midst of the Cold War and allowed Britain to maintain its status as a nuclear power, negotiated in the Nassau Agreements with the US.
On May 15, 1800, the Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley, defeated the Sultan of Mysore, Tipu Sultan, at the Battle of Seringapatam, completing the British conquest of southern India. The death of Tipu Sultan in the battle ended the greatest resistance to British colonial rule on the Indian subcontinent. The Sultan, known as the "Tiger of Mysore", was immortalised for his fierce resistance.
