History also happened on this day

1886

On May 1, 1886, thousands of American workers demonstrated in Chicago and other cities demanding the eight-hour working day under the slogan "eight hours for work, eight hours for rest, eight hours for what we will". The disturbances on the 4th in Haymarket Square, where several police and civilians died, led to the execution of anarchist leaders and established May 1 as International Workers' Day.

🏳️1945

On May 1, 1945, Hamburg Radio announced Adolf Hitler's death to the world, describing that he had died "in action" — in reality he had committed suicide the day before. That same day, the new Reich Chancellor, Admiral Karl Dönitz, began surrender negotiations. The war in Europe would officially end seven days later, on May 8, with the signing of the capitulation.

🏰1931

On May 1, 1931, US President Herbert Hoover inaugurated the Empire State Building in New York by pressing a button at the White House that switched on its lights. At 443 metres (102 floors), it was the tallest building in the world for 41 years. Built during the Great Depression in just 410 days, the Empire State became the most recognisable symbol of the New York skyline.
