On April 29, 1945, American troops liberated Dachau concentration camp — the first founded by the Nazis in 1933, which operated for twelve years. They found more than 30,000 prisoners and the corpses of tens of thousands of victims in mass graves and train wagons. The liberation of Dachau was one of the most shocking episodes that confirmed to the world the reality of the Holocaust.

On April 29, 1901, Japanese Emperor Hirohito was born — who would reign as Showa (Enlightened Peace) for 62 years, the longest reign in Japanese history. Under his reign, Japan expanded militarily in Asia, fought in World War II and announced the surrender on August 15, 1945. Hirohito died on January 7, 1989. Controversy over his responsibility for the war remains alive.

On April 29, 1992, a Los Angeles jury acquitted four white police officers accused of beating Black motorist Rodney King, despite the incident having been filmed and broadcast on television. The acquittal triggered the 1992 Los Angeles Riots — the worst in American history: six days of violence with 63 deaths, 12,000 arrested and $1 billion in damage.
