Two days later, Hitler committed suicide.
On April 28, 1952, the Treaty of Peace with Japan came into force, officially ending the state of war between Japan and the Allied powers. The treaty, signed in San Francisco on September 8, 1951, restored full sovereignty to Japan but established the basis for the American military presence in the country. It is also the day Japan recovered its independence after seven years of Allied occupation.
