In the early hours of August 18, 1969, Jimi Hendrix took the stage at Woodstock as the closing act of the festival, before the 400,000 remaining attendees after three days of music. His distorted rendition of the US national anthem became the most iconic moment of the festival and one of the defining symbols of 1960s counterculture.

On August 18, 1868, French astronomer Pierre Janssen observed a total solar eclipse from Guntur, India, and detected an unknown yellow spectral line that did not correspond to any known terrestrial element. It was helium, the first element discovered beyond Earth before being found on it. Its name comes from Helios, the Greek god of the Sun.

On August 18, 1945, Subhas Chandra Bose, the Indian independence leader who had collaborated with Japan and Germany to expel the British from India, disappeared following a plane crash in Taiwan. His death was never officially confirmed, and for decades many Indians believed he was still alive, turning him into a mythical figure.
