What happened on September 1?
On September 1, 1939, Nazi Germany invaded Poland with more than 1.5 million soldiers, triggering World War II. Two days later, the United Kingdom and France declared war on Germany. The conflict would last six years, leave between 70 and 85 million dead, and change the world order forever.
On September 1, 1991, Uzbekistan declared its independence from the Soviet Union, taking advantage of the chaos of the failed Moscow coup. The Central Asian republic, with more than 30 million inhabitants, is the most populous country in Central Asia and home to the historic cities of Samarkand and Bukhara, crossroads of the ancient Silk Road.
On September 1, 1967, the BBC began regular colour broadcasts from the Television Centre in London, becoming the first European broadcaster to offer colour programming on a systematic basis.
