What happened on August 29?
On August 29, 1949, the Soviet Union detonated its first atomic bomb, known as Joe-1, at the Semipalatinsk test site in Kazakhstan. The success caught the West off guard — it had expected the Soviets to take years longer. The news ended the American nuclear monopoly and sharply escalated Cold War tensions.
On August 29, 1526, the Ottoman army of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent annihilated the Hungarian forces at the Battle of Mohács, killing King Louis II of Hungary himself. The defeat opened the door to Ottoman domination of much of central Europe for 150 years and permanently altered the balance of power on the continent.
