On September 5, 1972, a commando from the Palestinian group Black September took eleven athletes and coaches of the Israeli Olympic team hostage at the Munich Games. The failed police rescue ended with the deaths of all eleven hostages, one German police officer and five terrorists. The Games continued, amid controversy, the following day.
On September 5, 1977, NASA launched the Voyager 1 probe, which in the following years flew past Jupiter and Saturn and sent back the most detailed images ever seen of both planets. In 2012 it crossed the boundary of the solar system, becoming the human-made object that has travelled furthest in history.
On September 5, 1997, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, founder of the Missionaries of Charity and Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 1979, died in Calcutta. She had dedicated nearly fifty years to caring for the poorest of the poor in India and around the world. She was canonised by Pope Francis in 2016.
