On September 12, 1683, a coalition of European forces led by Polish King Jan Sobieski defeated the Ottoman army at the Battle of Vienna, ending a two-month siege. It was the definitive turning point in Ottoman expansion into Western Europe and the beginning of the long decline of the Ottoman Empire on the continent.
On September 12, 1962, President John F. Kennedy delivered his famous speech at Rice University in Houston: "We choose to go to the Moon."
