On September 10, 1919, the Allies signed the Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye with Austria, dismembering the Austro-Hungarian Empire and creating the new states of Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia and Poland. Austria was reduced to a small German-speaking republic expressly forbidden from uniting with Germany.
On September 10, 1967, the population of Gibraltar voted in a referendum with 99.6% in favour of remaining under British sovereignty, rejecting Spain's integration proposal. Spain closed the border in retaliation, keeping it sealed until 1985. Sovereignty over the Rock remains one of the longest-running diplomatic disputes between the two countries today.
On September 10, 1994, the commercial service of the Eurostar was inaugurated, the high-speed train linking London with Paris and Brussels through the Channel Tunnel. The London-Paris journey took just three hours, radically transforming travel between the United Kingdom and the European continent.
