🇰🇵1948

On September 9, 1948, Kim Il-sung proclaimed the founding of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea — North Korea — in the zone occupied by the Soviet Union after World War II. The regime he founded would become one of the most hermetic and long-lasting dictatorships in contemporary history, governed by the same family to this day.

🇨🇳1976

On September 9, 1976, Mao Zedong, founder of the People's Republic of China and one of the most influential and controversial leaders of the twentieth century, died. He had governed China for twenty-seven years. The policies of the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution caused tens of millions of deaths, while also radically modernising the country.

⚔️9

In September of 9 AD, three Roman legions under General Publius Quinctilius Varus were annihilated in the Teutoburg Forest by a Germanic coalition led by Arminius. More than 20,000 Roman soldiers died in the ambush. The defeat halted Roman expansion east of the Rhine and permanently fixed the boundary between the Roman and Germanic worlds.
