What happened on September 8?
On September 8, 1966, the American network NBC aired the first episode of Star Trek, the science fiction series created by Gene Roddenberry. With a multiracial and multicultural crew in the 23rd century, the series raised reflections on tolerance, exploration and the future of humanity. It would become one of the most influential entertainment franchises in history.
On September 8, 1991, North Macedonia held an independence referendum from Yugoslavia, with an overwhelming result in favour of sovereignty. It was the only Yugoslav republic to separate entirely peacefully. Its UN membership was blocked for decades by Greece, which disputed the use of the name "Macedonia", until the Prespa Agreement was reached in 2019.
On September 8, 1380, Prince Dmitri Donskoy of Moscow defeated the army of the Golden Horde at the Battle of Kulikovo on the banks of the Don river. It was the first major Russian victory over the Mongols after a century and a half of domination. Although the Horde recovered, the battle marked the beginning of the rise of the principality of Moscow as the dominant power in Russia.
