What happened on September 22?
On September 22, 1792, the French National Convention proclaimed the First Republic, abolishing the monarchy the day after the victory at Valmy. It was the beginning of a new era in French and European history: sovereignty no longer resided in the king but in the people. The date marked the start of Year I of the new French republican calendar.
On September 22, 2000, more than 1,000 cities in 35 countries took part in the first World Car Free Day, a European initiative to promote public transport and reduce urban pollution.
