On September 19, 1985, an earthquake of magnitude 8.1 struck Mexico City, leaving between 10,000 and 40,000 dead and destroying thousands of buildings. The spontaneous response of citizens, who organised to rescue survivors without waiting for the government, was seen as a turning point in Mexican civil society and a precursor of later political mobilisations.

On September 19, 1356, the Black Prince Edward of Wales defeated the army of French King John II at the Battle of Poitiers, capturing the monarch himself.
