Historical events & facts — September 17
What happened on September 17?
On September 17, 1787, the delegates of the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia signed the United States Constitution, the most influential founding document in the history of modern democracy. With just seven original articles, it established a system of government with three separate branches that has served as a model for constitutions worldwide.
On September 17, 1862, the Union and Confederate armies clashed at the Battle of Antietam in Maryland, in the bloodiest single day of the American Civil War: more than 22,000 casualties in one day. The tactical Union victory gave Lincoln the political justification to announce the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing the slaves of the South.
On September 17, 1976, NASA officially unveiled the space shuttle Enterprise, the first one built, before a crowd that included the cast of the Star Trek series — from which it took its name. The Enterprise never flew to space, but it conducted the atmospheric tests that enabled the development of the shuttle programme that operated from 1981 to 2011.
