On September 18, 1810, an open council in Santiago de Chile established the First National Government Junta, beginning the process of independence from Spanish rule. Although full independence did not come until 1818, September 18 is celebrated as Chilean Independence Day and is the country's most important national holiday.
On September 18, 1947, President Harry Truman signed the National Security Act, creating the United States Air Force as an independent branch, separating it from the army. The same law created the National Security Council and the CIA, radically transforming the country's defence and intelligence structure for the Cold War era.
On September 29, 1988, the space shuttle Discovery launched on mission STS-26, marking NASA's return to flight after the Challenger disaster of January 1986. For two years and eight months, NASA had grounded all crewed flights to redesign its safety procedures. The launch was watched live by millions of people.
