On October 2, 1869, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born in Porbandar, India. Known as the Mahatma ("great soul"), he developed the philosophy of non-violent resistance that he used to lead India's independence from British rule. His method inspired civil rights movements around the world, from Martin Luther King to Nelson Mandela.

On October 2, 1968, ten days before the Mexico City Olympics, the Mexican army opened fire on a student demonstration at the Plaza de las Tres Culturas in Tlatelolco. The exact death toll remains unknown — between 30 and 300 depending on sources — and the government concealed it for decades. It is the darkest episode in Mexico's recent history.

On October 2, 1950, cartoonist Charles M. Schulz published the first Peanuts strip in seven American newspapers, introducing the world to Charlie Brown and his dog Snoopy. The strip would become the most widely read in history, with 355 million readers in 75 countries. Schulz published it without interruption for nearly fifty years, until his death in 2000.
