What happened on September 29?
On September 29, 1954, twelve European countries signed in Paris the convention creating CERN, the European Council for Nuclear Research, based in Geneva. Founded to rebuild European science after the war, CERN developed the world's largest particle accelerator and, in 1989, its researcher Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web.
On September 29, 1829, the Metropolitan Police of London — known as Scotland Yard — opened its doors, becoming the first modern professional police force in the Western world. Founded by politician Robert Peel, from whom officers took the nickname bobbies, it established the model of civil policing subsequently adopted by most countries.
On September 29, 1901, physicist Enrico Fermi was born in Como, Italy — one of the most important scientists of the twentieth century. Winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1938, he built the world's first nuclear reactor in Chicago (1942) and was one of the fathers of the Manhattan Project. He emigrated to the United States fleeing the fascist racial laws.

Diana Vreeland
Diana Vreeland was an American fashion columnist and editor. She worked for the fashion magazine Harper's Bazaar and as editor-in-chief at Vogue, later becoming a special consultant to the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She was named on the International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame in 1964. Vreeland coined the term youthquake in 1965.
