On September 29, 1954, twelve European countries signed in Paris the convention creating CERN, the European Council for Nuclear Research, based in Geneva. Founded to rebuild European science after the war, CERN developed the world's largest particle accelerator and, in 1989, its researcher Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web.

On September 29, 1829, the Metropolitan Police of London — known as Scotland Yard — opened its doors, becoming the first modern professional police force in the Western world. Founded by politician Robert Peel, from whom officers took the nickname bobbies, it established the model of civil policing subsequently adopted by most countries.

⚛️1901

On September 29, 1901, physicist Enrico Fermi was born in Como, Italy — one of the most important scientists of the twentieth century. Winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1938, he built the world's first nuclear reactor in Chicago (1942) and was one of the fathers of the Manhattan Project. He emigrated to the United States fleeing the fascist racial laws.
