On September 29, 1938, Hitler, Mussolini, Chamberlain and Daladier signed the Munich Agreement, ceding the Czechoslovak Sudetenland to Nazi Germany in exchange for a promise of peace. British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain returned to London proclaiming "peace for our time". Six months later, Hitler occupied the rest of Czechoslovakia.
On September 7, 1860, Giuseppe Garibaldi made his triumphant entry into Naples at the head of his Thousand Red Shirts, completing the conquest of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. The populist gesture of the warlord — who arrived by steamship accompanied by thousands of volunteers — accelerated the Italian unification that would be formally proclaimed in 1861.
On September 28, 1928, Scottish bacteriologist Alexander Fleming returned to his laboratory at St. Mary's Hospital in London after the summer holidays and noticed that a mould had contaminated his staphylococcal cultures and destroyed them. That mould was Penicillium notatum, and its accidental discovery revolutionised modern medicine forever.
