On September 27, 1998, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two PhD students at Stanford University, officially founded Google in a garage in Menlo Park, California. They started with an investment of 100,000 dollars. Twenty-five years later, Alphabet — Google's parent company — is one of the most valuable companies in the world and the most widely used search engine in history.

On September 27, 1825, the Stockton and Darlington Railway inaugurated the first steam-powered passenger and freight service in history, in the north of England. The locomotive Locomotion No. 1, driven by George Stephenson, covered the route at around 24 km/h. It was the official birth of the modern railway era.

On September 27, 1540, Pope Paul III formally approved the Society of Jesus, the religious order founded by the Spaniard Ignatius of Loyola.
