What happened on September 30?
On September 30, 1791, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart attended the premiere of The Magic Flute at the Theater auf der Wieden in Vienna. The opera, filled with Masonic symbolism, was an immediate popular success. Mozart would die just two months later, on December 5, 1791, aged 35, leaving his Requiem unfinished.
On September 30, 1966, Botswana gained independence from the United Kingdom, becoming a republic under the leadership of Seretse Khama. One of the poorest countries in the world at the time of independence, Botswana discovered enormous diamond deposits and became an example of economic development and democratic stability on the African continent.
On September 30, 1955, actor James Dean died aged 24 in a car crash near Cholame, California, at the wheel of his Porsche 550 Spyder. He had starred in only three films — East of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause and Giant — but his image became the defining symbol of youthful non-conformism and twentieth-century rebellion.
