On October 14, 1962, an American U-2 spy plane photographed Soviet missile ramps under construction in Cuba, triggering the Cuban Missile Crisis. For thirteen days, the US and USSR stood on the brink of nuclear war. The crisis was resolved with the Soviet withdrawal of the missiles in exchange for US guarantees not to invade Cuba and the withdrawal of American missiles from Turkey.

On October 14, 1947, American pilot Chuck Yeager became the first person to break the sound barrier aboard the experimental Bell X-1 aircraft, reaching Mach 1.06 over the Mojave Desert. Yeager flew that day with two broken ribs from a horse fall, concealing the injury to avoid losing the historic flight.
