What happened on October 17?
On October 17, 1961, the Paris police massacred Algerian protesters demonstrating peacefully against the curfew imposed specifically on them. The death toll, concealed for decades, is estimated between 40 and 300. It is one of the most serious crimes committed on French soil in peacetime and was not acknowledged by the French state until 1998.
On October 17, 2001, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the United Nations and its Secretary-General Kofi Annan for their contribution to a better organised and more peaceful world. The award came weeks after 9/11 and recognised the UN's multilateral work at a moment of maximum global tension.
On October 17, 1777, British General John Burgoyne signed the surrender of his army to American forces at Saratoga, New York. It was the first major American victory in the War of Independence and the turning point that convinced France to enter the war on the side of the colonists, decisively changing the course of the conflict.

Tom Poston
Thomas Gordon Poston was an American actor, appearing in television roles from the 1950s through the early to mid-2000s, reportedly appearing in more sitcoms than any other actor. In the 1980s, he played George Utley on the CBS sitcom Newhart, receiving three Emmy Award nominations for the role. In addition he had a number of film roles and appeared frequently on Broadway and television game shows.
Aimo Koivunen
Aimo Allan Koivunen was a Finnish soldier in the Continuation War and the first documented case of a soldier overdosing on methamphetamine during combat. The case gained more notoriety due to Koivunen's fighting abilities whilst intoxicated.
Zhao Ziyang
Zhao Ziyang was a Chinese politician. He served as the premier of China from 1980 to 1987, as vice chairman of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) from 1981 to 1982, and as the general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party from 1987 to 1989. He was in charge of the political reforms in China from 1986, but lost power for his support of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests.
