On October 10, 1868, Cuban landowner Carlos Manuel de Céspedes freed his slaves and delivered the Cry of Yara, beginning the Ten Years' War, the first major armed insurrection against Spanish colonial rule in Cuba. Although Spain suppressed the rebellion in 1878, it was the seed of the independence movement that would culminate in 1898.

On October 10, 1911, the Wuchang military uprising triggered the Chinese Revolution that overthrew the Qing dynasty and ended more than two thousand years of monarchy in China. On January 1, 1912, Sun Yat-sen proclaimed the Republic of China. The date, known as Double Ten Day, is today the national holiday of Taiwan.

On October 10, 1967, the Outer Space Treaty entered into force, signed by the United States, the Soviet Union and the United Kingdom. The agreement prohibits placing nuclear weapons in orbit, on the Moon or on any celestial body, and declares space as the common heritage of humanity. It is the main legal text governing international space activities.
