What happened on October 19?
On October 19, 1987, stock markets around the world crashed in what became known as Black Monday. The Dow Jones index fell 22.6% in a single day, the largest single-day percentage drop in history. The collapse spread from Hong Kong to Europe and America, foreshadowing the global interconnection of modern financial markets.
On October 19, 1781, British General Lord Cornwallis surrendered to the combined American and French forces at Yorktown, Virginia, in the decisive battle of the American War of Independence. According to legend, the military band played "The World Turned Upside Down" during the surrender. The act marked the effective end of hostilities.
On October 19, 1986, the President of Mozambique, Samora Machel, founder and first leader of the independent country, died in a mysterious plane crash on the South African border. Subsequent investigation suggested the aircraft was diverted by a false radio signal. Machel is considered the father of the Mozambican nation.

Minoru Yasui was an American lawyer from Oregon. Born in Hood River, Oregon, he earned both an undergraduate degree and his law degree at the University of Oregon. He was one of the few Japanese Americans after the bombing of Pearl Harbor who fought laws that directly targeted Japanese Americans or Japanese immigrants.
