On October 5, 2011, Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple, died aged 56 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Jobs had revolutionised the technology industry with the Mac, iPod, iPhone and iPad, forever transforming the way human beings interact with technology. His presentation style and design vision defined an entire generation.
On October 5, 1962, Dr. No premiered in London — the first film in the James Bond franchise, starring Sean Connery. Based on Ian Fleming's novel, the film launched one of the longest-running and most lucrative cinema franchises in history, with more than twenty-five films, six actors in the spy role and billions of dollars grossed.
On October 5, 1910, a revolution overthrew the Portuguese monarchy and proclaimed the First Portuguese Republic, ending nearly eight centuries of royalty. King Manuel II fled into exile in Britain. Portugal thus became the second republic in Western Europe, after France, though the new republic would soon fall into chronic political instability.
