On September 25, 1513, Spanish explorer *Vasco Núñez de Balboa* became the *first European to see the Pacific Ocean* from the American continent, after crossing the *Panama* isthmus on foot. Four days later he reached the coast and claimed the sea in the name of the Spanish Crown. The Pacific became known as the *South Sea*.
