On September 11, 2001, nineteen Al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial aircraft in the United States. Two struck the Twin Towers in New York, one hit the Pentagon, and a fourth crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers fought back. Nearly 3,000 people died. The attacks triggered the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

On September 11, 1973, General Augusto Pinochet led a coup that overthrew democratically elected President Salvador Allende, who died during the bombing of the La Moneda Palace. The military dictatorship that followed lasted seventeen years, during which thousands of people were detained, tortured or disappeared.

⚔️1297

On September 11, 1297, the Scottish commander William Wallace defeated the English army at the Battle of Stirling Bridge with a far smaller force. The victory was made possible by a trap set on the narrow bridge over the Forth river. Wallace became the symbol of Scottish resistance against the English rule of Edward I.
