On September 4, 1970, Salvador Allende won the presidential election in Chile, becoming the first democratically elected socialist president in Latin America. His government pursued the nationalisation of copper and deep social reforms until he was overthrown by Augusto Pinochet's military coup on September 11, 1973.

🏙️1781

On September 4, 1781, forty-four settlers founded the town of Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles del Río Porciúncula, known today as Los Angeles. The city, founded under Spanish rule in what would become California, is now the second most populous city in the United States and the world capital of cinema and entertainment.

💡1882

On September 4, 1882, Thomas Edison switched on the Pearl Street Station in New York, the first commercial electric power station in history. It supplied electricity to 85 customers within a one-kilometre radius. It was the birth of the modern electrical grid and the beginning of the era in which electricity moved from laboratory curiosity to mass public utility.
