On September 2, 1945, representatives of Japan signed the unconditional surrender aboard the battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, before General Douglas MacArthur. With that act, World War II — the most destructive conflict in human history — was officially brought to an end, six years after it had begun.

On September 3, 1783, the Treaty of Paris was signed between the United States and Great Britain, formally recognising the independence of the former American colonies. The agreement also established the new country's borders and marked the end of the American War of Independence, which had begun eight years earlier.

On September 2, 1945, Ho Chi Minh proclaimed the independence of Vietnam in Hanoi's Ba Dinh Square, opening his speech with words borrowed from the American Declaration of Independence.
