On August 26, 1789, the French National Constituent Assembly approved the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, one of the founding documents of modern democracy. Its principles — liberty, equality and popular sovereignty — directly influenced the constitutions of dozens of countries and inspired the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948.
On August 26, 1920, the United States certified the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote. The amendment was the result of decades of struggle by the suffragist movement and made the US one of the most populous countries in the world to recognise women's suffrage.
August 26 is Heroes' Day in Namibia, commemorating the start of the armed struggle for independence from South African rule in 1966. Namibia was the last country in Africa to achieve full independence, in 1990, after decades of resistance by SWAPO and international pressure against the South African apartheid regime.
