On August 23, 1939, Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union signed the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, a non-aggression agreement that included a secret protocol to divide Eastern Europe between them. The pact gave Hitler a free hand to invade Poland nine days later, triggering World War II.
On August 23, 1989, two million people in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania formed a 675-kilometre human chain — the Baltic Way — to peacefully demand independence from the Soviet Union. The meticulously coordinated demonstration marked the 50th anniversary of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and became a symbol of non-violent resistance.
August 23 is the European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Stalinism and Nazism, also known as Black Ribbon Day. Established by the European Parliament in 2008 to remember the victims of the two great totalitarianisms of the twentieth century, it is commemorated each year on the anniversary of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact.
