On September 6, 1522, the Victoria, the sole surviving ship of Magellan's expedition, docked at Sanlúcar de Barrameda with only 18 sailors aboard, completing the first circumnavigation of the Earth in history. Its captain, Juan Sebastián Elcano, was granted by Charles I a coat of arms bearing the motto: "You were the first to circumnavigate me."

On September 6, 1968, the small kingdom of Eswatini (then called Swaziland) gained independence from the United Kingdom, becoming one of the last absolute monarchies in Africa. Ruled by King Sobhuza II, who would reign until 1982, it is one of the smallest and most densely populated countries on the African continent.

On September 6, 1966, Hendrik Verwoerd, the chief architect of the apartheid system in South Africa, was stabbed to death in the Parliament of Cape Town by a parliamentary messenger. Verwoerd had been responsible for the most repressive racial segregation legislation. His death did not halt apartheid, which continued until 1991.
