On September 3, 1939, the United Kingdom and France declared war on Germany after Hitler rejected their ultimatum over the invasion of Poland. Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain announced the declaration by radio in a speech that began: "This morning the British Ambassador in Berlin handed the German Government a final note..."
On September 9, 1975, NASA launched the Viking 2 probe toward Mars. It landed on the Utopia Planitia plain on September 3, 1976, and transmitted images and data about the Martian surface for more than three years. Together with Viking 1, it searched unsuccessfully for signs of microbial life in the Martian soil.
On September 3, 1971, Qatar proclaimed its independence from the United Kingdom, ending the British protectorate over the small Persian Gulf emirate.
