On August 27, 1883, the Krakatoa volcano in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra erupted with devastating violence. The explosion was so powerful it was heard 5,000 kilometres away. The collapse of the caldera generated tsunamis that killed more than 36,000 people and ejected so much dust into the atmosphere that the planet cooled for years.

On August 27, 1928, fifteen countries signed the Kellogg-Briand Pact in Paris, pledging to renounce war as an instrument of national policy. Although the treaty was eventually signed by 62 nations, it lacked enforcement mechanisms and did not prevent World War II. It remains in force as a precedent of international law.

On August 27, 1991, Moldova declared its independence from the Soviet Union, taking advantage of the collapse of the Moscow coup. The small republic, located between Romania and Ukraine, was born with the latent conflict of Transnistria, a pro-Russian separatist strip that remains one of Europe's most complex frozen territorial conflicts today.
