In the early hours of August 13, 1961, soldiers and workers of the German Democratic Republic began erecting the Berlin Wall, sealing the border between the two Germanys. The wall divided families overnight and became the most powerful symbol of the Cold War. It stood for 28 years, until it fell on November 9, 1989.
