In the early hours of August 13, 1961, soldiers and workers of the German Democratic Republic began erecting the Berlin Wall, sealing the border between the two Germanys. The wall divided families overnight and became the most powerful symbol of the Cold War. It stood for 28 years, until it fell on November 9, 1989.
On August 13, 1704, the Anglo-Austrian allied forces defeated the Franco-Bavarian army at the Battle of Blenheim during the War of the Spanish Succession. It was one of Louis XIV's greatest defeats and halted the French advance on Vienna. The Duke of Marlborough, who commanded the victory, became Britain's most celebrated military hero.
