What happened on July 30?
On July 30, 1930, Uruguay defeated Argentina 4–2 in the final of the first FIFA World Cup in history, held in Montevideo. The tournament brought together thirteen national teams and confirmed football as the world's defining sport. Uruguay lifted the trophy in front of more than 68,000 spectators at the Estadio Centenario.
On July 30, 1945, the US cruiser USS Indianapolis was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in the Pacific Ocean and sank in twelve minutes. Of its 1,196 crew members, only 316 survived: rescue did not arrive for four days. It remains the greatest loss of life at sea in the history of the United States Navy.
On July 30, 1971, the Apollo 15 lunar module landed on the Hadley Rille plain, beginning the most ambitious Apollo mission to date. For the first time, astronauts David Scott and James Irwin would use the lunar rover to travel across the Moon's surface and collect samples several kilometres from the module.

Jan Heemskerk Abrahamszoon was a Dutch politician who served as Chairman of the Council of Ministers from 1874 to 1877, and again from 1883 to 1888. His son, Theo Heemskerk also served as Chairman of the Council of Ministers.
Marina Popovich
Marina Lavrentyevna Zhikhoreva was a Soviet Air Forces colonel, engineer, and decorated Soviet test pilot. In 1964, she became the third woman and the first Soviet woman to break the sound barrier. Known as "Madame MiG", for her work in the Soviet fighter, she set more than one hundred aviation world records on over 40 types of aircraft over her career.

Georg Gänswein is a German prelate of the Catholic Church who was named Apostolic Nuncio to Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia on 24 June 2024. He served as Prefect of the Papal Household from 2012 to 2023 and was the Personal Secretary of Pope Benedict XVI. He was a professor of Canon Law at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross for about a decade and has been an archbishop since 2013.
