On July 28, 1914, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, triggering a web of alliances that within days drew all the major European powers into the conflict. World War I would last four years, claim more than 17 million lives, and completely redraw the political map of the world.
On July 28, 1821, José de San Martín proclaimed the Independence of Peru in the Plaza Mayor of Lima, completing a process he had begun with his military campaign from Argentina and Chile. Although the war of independence would continue for two more years, this declaration was the symbolic founding act of the Peruvian nation.
