On July 31, 1971, Apollo 15 astronauts David Scott and James Irwin drove the first lunar roving vehicle (LRV) across the Moon's surface near Hadley Rille. The electric rover allowed exploration of distances impossible on foot and transformed the scope of lunar surface science forever.
On July 31, 1917, the Battle of Passchendaele began, also known as the Third Battle of Ypres, on the Western Front of World War I. Four months of fighting in the mud of Flanders left more than half a million casualties on both sides for a territorial advance of barely eight kilometres.
