What happened on August 1?
On August 1, 1914, Germany declared war on Russia, setting in motion the alliance system that within four days would turn a regional conflict into World War I. The declaration followed a German ultimatum and Russia's general mobilisation, and marked the point of no return toward the largest armed conflict the world had yet seen.
On August 1, 1981, MTV launched as the first television channel dedicated exclusively to music videos. Its very first broadcast was Video Killed the Radio Star by The Buggles. MTV transformed the music industry, made artists' visual image as important as their music, and launched the careers of stars like Michael Jackson and Madonna.
On August 1, 1291, the cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden signed the Federal Charter, the founding document of the Swiss Confederation. This mutual defence pact between three Alpine communities is considered the birth certificate of Switzerland, one of Europe's oldest and most stable states. The date is celebrated today as Swiss National Day.
