On August 8, 1967, five Southeast Asian countries — Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand — founded ASEAN, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Created during the Cold War as a bloc for economic and political cooperation, it has become one of the most influential regional organisations in the world.
On August 8, 1974, Richard Nixon announced on television that he would resign as President of the United States the following day, becoming the only president in the country's history to resign from office. The decision came after the Watergate scandal, which proved that Nixon had ordered the surveillance of his political rivals.
On August 8, 1976, the Soviet Union launched the Luna 24 probe, the last mission in history to bring lunar soil samples back to Earth. The capsule landed in Siberia with 170 grams of lunar rock collected from two metres below the surface. There would be no other lunar sample return mission until China's Chang'e 5 in 2020.
