On August 7, 1998, coordinated car bombs exploded almost simultaneously outside the US embassies in Nairobi (Kenya) and Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), killing more than 220 people and wounding over 4,000. The attacks were claimed by Al-Qaeda and marked the organisation's first major offensive against American interests.

On August 7, 1960, Ivory Coast proclaimed its independence from France, becoming one of fifteen African countries to achieve sovereignty that year. Under the leadership of Félix Houphouët-Boigny, it became for decades one of the most stable and prosperous economies in West Africa.

On August 7, 1944, IBM and Harvard University publicly unveiled the Mark I, the first large-scale electromechanical computer in history. Fifteen metres long, weighing five tonnes and containing 750,000 parts, it could perform complex arithmetic operations automatically. It was the first step toward the modern computing era.
