What happened on July 26?
On July 26, 1956, Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser announced the nationalisation of the Suez Canal, until then controlled by Franco-British interests. The decision triggered the Suez Crisis, an international conflict that marked the definitive decline of European colonial power in the Middle East.
On July 26, 1953, a young Fidel Castro led the Attack on the Moncada Barracks in Santiago de Cuba, the armed raid that would mark the beginning of the Cuban Revolution. The attempt failed and Castro was imprisoned, but the act became the founding myth of the movement that would topple Batista six years later.
On July 26, 1847, Liberia became the first independent republic in Africa, declaring sovereignty after being founded as a colony by freed slaves from the United States. Its constitution and flag were modelled directly on those of the United States, the country that had funded its creation.
