What happened on August 28?
On August 28, 1963, more than 250,000 people took part in the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. At the end of the day, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, becoming the most celebrated address in the history of the American civil rights movement.
On August 28, 1749, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born in Frankfurt am Main. Considered the greatest writer in the German language of all time, he is the author of Faust, The Sorrows of Young Werther and Wilhelm Meister. Goethe was also a scientist, philosopher and statesman, and his figure embodies the Enlightenment ideal of the universal man.
On August 28, 1830, the locomotive Tom Thumb, built by Peter Cooper, raced against a horse in the first ever contest between a steam engine and a draught animal, in Baltimore. Although the horse won due to a mechanical failure, the demonstration convinced investors that railways had a future, accelerating the expansion of rail travel across the United States.

He was born in Lima, Peru while his mother, Spanish actress Carola Fernán-Gómez, was making a tour in Latin America.
