On August 28, 1749, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born in Frankfurt am Main. Considered the greatest writer in the German language of all time, he is the author of Faust, The Sorrows of Young Werther and Wilhelm Meister. Goethe was also a scientist, philosopher and statesman, and his figure embodies the Enlightenment ideal of the universal man.

On August 28, 1830, the locomotive Tom Thumb, built by Peter Cooper, raced against a horse in the first ever contest between a steam engine and a draught animal, in Baltimore. Although the horse won due to a mechanical failure, the demonstration convinced investors that railways had a future, accelerating the expansion of rail travel across the United States.
