On May 11, 1997, IBM's supercomputer Deep Blue defeated world chess champion Garry Kasparov in the decisive game of their historic rematch, winning the series 3.5 to 2.5. It was the first time in history a machine had defeated the world's best chess player under competition conditions. Deep Blue's victory was a milestone in artificial intelligence history and marked the beginning of machine supremacy in chess.

On May 11, 1960, Israeli Mossad agent Peter Malkin captured Adolf Eichmann — one of the principal organisers of the Holocaust — in Buenos Aires, where he was living under the false identity of Ricardo Klement. Eichmann was secretly brought to Israel, where he was tried and condemned to death. His trial, followed worldwide, was a milestone in international recognition of the Holocaust as a crime against humanity.

On May 11, 1904, painter Salvador Dalí was born in Figueres, Catalonia — the most famous representative of Spanish and world surrealism. His works — The Persistence of Memory, The Great Masturbator, Christ of Saint John of the Cross — characterised by dreamlike images and an ultra-realistic academic technique, made him one of the most recognisable and controversial artists of the twentieth century. He died in Figueres in 1989.
